As children progress through school, we build on and extend the scale of their understanding and knowledge of: the world, its people, environments, landscapes and processes.
EYFS
In EYFS, Geography is taught predominantly through the area of ‘Knowledge and Understanding’.
Pupils learn about their immediate environment and local area. They are given opportunities to communicate about the similarities and differences which they can see in the world around them in the school building and outside areas.
EYFS pupils begin to broaden their understanding of their environments through regular visits to local parks, shops, libraries.
Pupils are encouraged to explore the wider world through discussing their own experiences of holidays, visits and books.
The varied early experiences pupils already have are greatly acknowledged and used as a starting point. The diverse cultural backgrounds of our pupils are celebrated and explored. Opportunities are always optimised to learn from one another in their ‘All About Me’ and ‘Celebrations’ topics.
Global links are made with pupils in Reception sending correspondence to other pupils in a school in Japan.
KS1 and KS2
Throughout Key Stage 1 and 2 the teaching, learning and sequencing of Geography is implemented through a carefully planned enquiry-led, skills-based curriculum. This is documented in a long term plan in which teachers have blocks of clear objectives to plan, teach and assess from. Tasks are selected and designed to meet the needs, appropriate challenge and interests of the children in their class.
In order to ensure consistency, progression and National Curriculum coverage throughout our mixed year groups, objectives are taught across each phase over a two year cycle: Year A- Global based enquiries and Year B- UK based enquires. Geography is taught in blocks throughout the year alternating with related History topics, so that children can achieve depth in their learning and make cross curricular links. Each block regularly builds on and revisits learning from previous units and is organised around locational and place knowledge, human and physical geography and geography skills and fieldwork.
Key knowledge and skills of each blocked topic are mapped across the school, ensuring that knowledge and vocabulary builds progressively and that children develop skills and use of geographical resources systematically as they approach more complex and demanding enquiries.
