History

This will be a starting block in EYFS and built upon as they enter Key Stage 1. Once this is consolidated, they will gain a wider experience of UK and global history. As a child moves through our school from KS1 to KS2 their historical knowledge, enquiry skills and understanding will deepen as it would have been built on the foundations laid in the previous years. The concepts that children explore are revisited in different units allowing children to apply new knowledge and developing skills and historical concepts in order to prepare them for future learning and life.

To ensure high standards of teaching and learning in History, we make sure that it has the same importance given to it as other subjects. The teaching of history is sequenced in the long term plan and to ensure consistency, progression and National Curriculum coverage throughout our mixed year groups, objectives are taught across each phase over a two year period: Year A – Global History and Year B Uk History.

• To develop all children and young people’s understanding of their place in the world; to promote curiosity and fascination – to become an active learner with a passion for history
• To develop in all children and young people a sense of who they are locally, nationally and globally.
• To develop well-rounded and successful historians, informed by the National Curriculum, and exposed to planned and differentiated lessons, taught with a clear history objective and enquiry led approach.
• To develop a knowledge of chronology within which children and young people can organise their understanding of the past.
• Encourage enquiry, inference, the ability to use high-order vocabulary, questioning, curiosity and communication
• For all children and young people to know what it means to be an historian. To be immersed in and inspired by history with transferable skills and a sound progression of knowledge and sequenced understanding of key concepts
• For all children and young people to take responsibility and make the best of life choices learning from the past; making memorable learning experiences; helping children and young people to understand diversity and their identity personally, locally, nationally and globally
• For all children and young people to think critically, question and challenge sources, opinions and information
