Music

At St Hugh of Lincoln, we believe music is an integral part of our school life. We are committed to providing a service for our children which inspires them to see the importance of music in their lives.

Through listening to a wide range of musical styles – singing, playing musical instruments and composing – we make music an enjoyable learning experience. All children are encouraged to participate in a variety of musical genres through which we aim to build up their love of music.

We are committed to giving our students the skills, to use their musical ideas and knowledge to enhance self-confidence and self-expression in the classroom and beyond.

As children progress through the school, they will learn how music is created through the interrelated dimensions of music: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and musical notation.

By Key Stage 2, the children will begin to explore improvisation and composition techniques alongside singing, performing and playing musical instruments.

Our Music Curriculum ensures that the children develop skills to sing, listen, play, perform and evaluate. This is delivered in each classroom through the music programme Charanga, a clear and comprehensive scheme of work which covers all the National Curriculum requirements in a full and progressive way.

During these lessons the children learn to read music, play instruments such as; Percussion instruments, the ukulele, the recorder, the glockenspiel and the keyboard.

In addition to our class music lessons the children will have opportunities to perform in various concerts and performances within school and outside of school throughout the school year – such as class assemblies, liturgies, class Instrumental lessons and assemblies, as well as learning from specialist music teachers who visit weekly to enhance our music curriculum.

The children in KS2 are encouraged to take part in the school choir and the children throughout the school have the opportunity to learn the violin, guitar and piano too. In addition to these lessons we have an afterschool singing club.

Music is very much at the heart of our learning here at St Hugh of Lincoln.
