Investigating the link between the distance and volume of sound

Our Sound Investigation

Today we investigated how sound travels over distance and how this affects volume. We used two different string telephones: one with a long piece of string and one with a shorter piece of string. We measured the distance between the cups and listened carefully to see how the volume changed as the sound travelled.

We found that the shorter string telephone carried the sound more clearly and loudly, because the vibrations had a shorter distance to travel. The longer string made the sound quieter, as the vibrations had to travel further and lost some energy along the way. This helped us understand that the further sound travels, the quieter it becomes.
