Observing that some materials change state when they are heated or cooled

Today we tested 4 different methods of melting chocolate. We made predictions about which would be the quickest and slowest methods and why. We also discussed how we could make it a fair test. We timed each method using a stopwatch, observing the changes to the chocolate after 1 minute and then continuing to time the chocolate until it had melted.

In our investigation, we found that the ‘microwave method’ was the quickest and the ‘ziplock bag massaged in our hands method’ was the slowest. We discussed the results as a class, identifying that the energy and heat created by a microwave was far greater than that of rubbing your hands together.
