Hello again Year 5!

I hope you are all keeping safe and well.

Over the last week, we have been helping Lucinda with her school work. We’ve also been doing some baking. She really enjoyed making fairy cakes and rocky road and we certainly enjoyed eating them! After that, she wrote her own instructions for baking fairy cakes and we took some photos to stick in her special diary as a memento of all the things we are doing at this unusual time. Have you been doing any baking?

As the weather is so beautiful at the moment, we have also been spending lots of time outside in the garden. Over the weeks, we have seen the plants and flowers bloom - I have included some photographs from our garden above. This is a wonderful reminder of how amazing nature is.

The theme for the home learning plan for week 5 is ‘Environment’. Maybe that could be your focus for this week.

You will remember that in class we started to investigate plastics in our oceans and discover the damaging affect they are having. You could look further into this by completing the protecting our oceans activity or maybe research a different aspect, for example climate change, recycling or endangered species.

You could also carry out some research about famous conservationists and people who care for the environment e.g. Sir David Attenborough or Jane Goodall. Think of different ways to present your findings. Do you remember when we wrote biographies in class? You wrote one about Michael Morpurgo. You could use the skills you’ve learnt to write another biography. Or you could design a poster, information leaflet, fact file, small booklet - I’m sure you’ll come up with lots of good ideas of your own!

Remember to keep working on your maths by doing the Active Learn activities. It would also be a good idea to visit WhiteRose maths: https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-5/

The BBC have produced a whole bank of lessons that use their engaging videos, including lessons by some very famous faces! They are definitely worth looking at: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/dailylessons

The government has also launched a new website providing a range of lessons and videos that you might like to try: https://www.thenational.academy/

Something that has come out of this current situation is that communities are growing closer. Our street has organised a game of Bingo from our front gardens for this weekend and, because of that, we are getting to know our neighbours better. I’ll let you know how it goes!

Take care and stay safe
